President Yoon Suk Yeol is leaving for Lima, Peru, where the APEC summit will be held today.
Following a trip to three Southeast Asian countries early last month, he will go on an eight-day tour of South America.
In particular, the Korea-U.S.-Japan summit will be held in the wake of the APEC summit in Peru.
It is the first summit with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba in 15 months since the Camp David summit in August last year.
A separate trilateral meeting expected to take place in the U.S. will not take place as U.S. President Biden has promised to hold talks between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan before he finishes his term.
[Kim Tae-hyo / 1st Deputy Director of the National Security Office (on the 10th): The trilateral cooperation for the promotion of peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region will also be intensified by establishing a system of cooperation between South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.]
At the same time, it is expected that there will be a series of summits, including Korea-Japan, Korea-China, and China. While the possibility of President
Yoon meeting with President-elect Trump is not expected to be high in reality, the presidential office is continuing to communicate closely.President Yun
expects to achieve substantial cooperation through bilateral talks with Latin American countries, including Peru, a country with a comprehensive strategic partnership and rich mineral resources.
The presidential office cited three things as the meaning of this visit to South America: realizing responsible diplomacy as a global hub, strengthening international solidarity to protect the international order based on norms, and expanding diplomatic horizons and practical cooperation to Latin America.
To this end, President Yoon plans to attend the APEC summit on the theme of "Advancement of Rights, Inclusion, and Growth" and emphasize that he will take the lead in creating a free and stable trade investment environment.
After that, he will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the G20 summit for the third consecutive year, announcing a pledge of humanitarian aid to combat hunger and poverty, and urging the international community to participate.
