In 2052, 28 years later, four out of 10 households are expected to be single-person households.

From 2022 to 2052, Statistics Korea predicted that the proportion of single-person households, or 34.1% in 2022, will increase to 41.3% in 2052, and that the proportion of single-person households will be the highest in all cities and provinces nationwide.

The proportion of married couples among all households is also expected to increase from 17.3% in 2022 to 22.8% in 2052.

The proportion of single-person households aged 65 or older among all households is expected to increase from 8.9% in 2022 to 21.3% in 2052.

The increase in single-person households is expected to gradually reduce the average number of household members from 2.26 in 2022 to 1.99 in 2034, just a decade later.

Twenty years later, in 2044, the number of household members is expected to be less than two in all cities and provinces nationwide, and 28 years later, in 2052, the average number of household members is expected to reach 1.81.

In 2022, the number of household heads aged 40 to 59 was the highest at 41.8% of the total, but in 2052, the number of people aged 60 and over is expected to be the highest at 59.8%.
