This year was the hottest year on record, with the Earth's average hitting an all-time high.
Amid a series of extreme weather events around the world due to warming, the Korean Peninsula was no exception.

[Co Barrett / WMO (World Meteorological Organization) Deputy Secretary General: Hotter than 2023 when all temperature records were broken]
2024, the hottest year on record for observation.
Even in the last 16 months, the global average temperature has exceeded 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times, which is considered the last line of the climate crisis.
The main reason for warming is the rise in sea level temperature, and the problem is that the temperature increase in the sea around the Korean Peninsula is 2.5 times larger than the global average.
Because of this, Korea has been at the center of extreme weather this year, with record weather throughout the four seasons.
The summer heat of around 30 degrees Celsius began in spring, and 80% of the days when the national average temperature was higher than usual reached the entire spring.
At the beginning of the rainy season, the so-called "Water Road" opened on the Korean Peninsula, and water bombs of more than 100mm per hour poured out nine times during the rainy season.
The heat that came after the rainy season broke all the records and made a new history.
Due to the heat wave that continued day and night, this summer ranked No. 1 in the national average temperature and No. 1 in the number of tropical nights,
In particular, Seoul's tropical nights lasted for 34 days without a day off, more than a week longer than 2018, when it was the hottest.
The heat wave did not recede in the fall, leading to Chuseok and giving rise to the new word "Haseok," and for the first time in history, the full moon of Hangawi emerged in the tropical night.
In November, before winter came, heavy snow was all-time.
Heavy snow in the central part of the country set a record for the first time in 117 years, spraying more than 40cm of snow bombs everywhere.
[Jang Dong-eon / Director of Meteorological Administration (October, parliamentary inspection of the Environment and Labor Committee): This year was a year when everyone realized the climate crisis due to the record-breaking heat that continued through the Chuseok holiday following torrential rains during the rainy season.]
As it is predicted that the warming sea could rise up to 4.5°C by the end of this century, extreme weather events are likely to become much more frequent in the future.
