Jean-Marie Le Pen, a senior politician in France's far-right camp, has died at the age of 96.

Le Pen's family announced that the deceased died at noon local time on the 7th after staying in a nursing home for several weeks.

Jean-Marie Le Pen is an Algerian war veteran who founded the far-right National Front (FN) in 1972, and is also the father of Marine Le Pen who leads the current National Union (RN).

During his lifetime, Le Pen's tough stance on immigration and other issues caused a stir by saying that supporters and opponents were sharply divided, and that the Holocaust was exaggerated.
