German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed that the inviolability of borders is a fundamental principle of international law that applies equally to all countries and a key component of Western values.
At the same time, he added that he also discussed the issue with the European leaders.
French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barro appeared on a local radio station and said Greenland was European territory and that the European Union would not allow sovereign border violations.
He then said that the essence of the United States is not imperialism, but urged Europe to become stronger as the law of the strong is in use.
"What is clear is that we have to respect the sovereignty of the country," European Commission spokesman Anita Heifer told a briefing, adding that this is the diplomatic values and core principles the EU is trying to protect.
He then reaffirmed his principled position to cooperate with the next U.S. government toward common goals and strategic interests.
