Special counsel Smith who prosecuted Trump resigned...Submission of investigation report

Special Counsel Jack Smith, who prosecuted U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and leaking confidential documents, has resigned.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced in a document submitted to the court on the 11th local time that Smith resigned the previous day.

Smith, who was appointed in 2022, investigated Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost, as well as his release and storage of confidential documents when he left office in early 2021, and criminally charged the former U.S. president in federal court for the first time ever in June 2023.

However, when Trump won the presidential election in November last year, the indictment was withdrawn.

The U.S. Department of Justice maintains its policy of not prosecuting a sitting president, seeing prosecutions against him as interference in his performance as president.

However, Special Counsel Smith prepared and submitted a final report containing the details of the investigation into Trump in accordance with the Justice Department's policy even though he gave up the prosecution.

Currently, the Justice Department and Trump are at odds over the release of the report, which the president-elect claimed was a "political show with no legal basis" and asked the court to ban it.

In response, a federal judge in Florida decided on the 7th that Smith's investigation results report should not be released until the appeals court decides.

However, the Ministry of Justice maintains that the minister will decide whether to release the report and that the results of the investigation into the alleged reversal of the presidential election results should be disclosed.

The Justice Department has asked the Federal Court of Appeals to quickly lift the court order that blocked the release of the report.

Trump, who has been a thorn in Smith's side, said in a podcast interview ahead of the presidential election in October last year that he would cut Smith in two seconds if he returned to the White House.
