A first trial ruling will be issued today (14th) over criminal responsibility for the overturning of the ship of Uiam Lake in Chuncheon, which caused a total of eight casualties, including five deaths and one missing in August 2020.

The Chuncheon District Court will sentence eight people, including Chuncheon city officials and artificial water plant island companies, to the first trial at 2 p.m. on charges of professional negligence and other charges.

They are accused of poor management of the artificial water plant island that was being installed in Uiam Lake at the time of the accident and not taking proper measures despite the possibility of predicting the accident.

During the trial, the defendants denied the allegations altogether, and even between the defendants, Chuncheon city officials and officials from the water plant installation company claimed that they were at fault with each other.

In August 2020, a civilian rubber boat, a city hall environmental monitoring ship, and a police boat were overturned in the process of tying an artificial water plant island floating in the current at Uiam Lake.

Of the eight people in the three ships at the time, five people, including city hall officials and police officers, were killed and two were rescued, but one fixed-term worker of the city hall was never found.
