A woman in her 30s who was arrested and charged with abusing seven siblings and leaving her youngest son unattended to death was also sentenced to heavy punishment in the appeal trial.

The Chuncheon court of the Seoul High Court sentenced 35-year-old Lee to 15 years in prison, the same as the original trial.

Her husband, 37, Hwang, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the first trial with Lee, withdrew his appeal during the trial and her sentence was confirmed.

The couple was put on trial for not feeding their seven children properly in an unheated house and frequently abusing and assaulting them, leaving their 8-year-old youngest son diagnosed with kidney disease to death.

Most of the 120 million won received from basic living expenses and child allowances was spent on entertainment expenses.

After the arrest, the couple's parental rights were deprived, and their children are known to be staying in child welfare facilities.

Two men in their 30s, who lived with the couple and were arrested and charged with habitual abuse of children, were sentenced to five years and two years in prison, respectively.
