The disability rate of severe trauma patients has suddenly increased in 2023, and health authorities have begun to analyze the cause.

There were 8,192 severe trauma cases in 2023, up slightly from 8,051 in 2022.

However, the disability rate among survivors jumped 6.5 percentage points from 67.3% in 2022 to 73.8% in 2023,
The rate of severe disability, which was judged to be vegetative and severely disabled by
activity disorder, increased by 5 percentage points from 23.8% to 28.8%.

This is the steepest increase in the last eight years, and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explained that the reason for the increase should be further analyzed.

Transportation accidents were the most common cause of severe trauma at 49.1%,

transportation accidents, the number of other types including personal mobility devices such as electric kickboards more than tripled from 34 in 2016 to 103 in 2023.

Severe trauma refers to a case in which the severity of injury during trauma caused by a traffic accident, a fall or a slip is at least 16 points, or a cardiac arrest or death before arriving at the hospital due to trauma.
