Domestic Search Equipment to Catch Small 'Drug Parcels'
X-ray energy control...Drugs on the letter were also caught.Localization of Security Search Equipment…Expectations to Replace Foreign Equipment

High-tech equipment that more efficiently catches drugs or radioactive dangerous substances sneaking in from abroad is put into customs clearance sites.

Until now, we have also localized luggage search equipment that has been mostly imported from foreign countries.

It is a so-called "curtain-hitting" method that spreads a small amount of drugs thinly, puts them inside the parcel box, and presses them with heavy objects to pass through the checkpoint.

Transmissive X-ray equipment could not filter out small drugs brought in like this, but the "scattering" equipment developed by domestic researchers shoots and catches X-rays in three directions.

We plan to install the Busan International Post Office first, where a lot of Chinese cargo comes in.

There are about 3,000 security search equipment across the country, including bag checkpoints that pass through security buildings such as government buildings.

Until now, we have expected foreign technology, but we are planning to localize key parts and mass-produce them.

[Lee Byung-no / Senior Researcher at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute: I was having difficulty in maintenance (while using foreign products) and learning AI because I did not provide raw data. However, since we localized software or hardware parts including 100% core parts this time, we can deliver them in the form that the Korea Customs Service wants...]

Testing for radioactive substances that are dangerous to the human body is also dramatically accelerated.

Previously, it was necessary to find where the radioactive materials were by putting them one by one, but the newly developed equipment finds exactly where the harmful substances are in the boxes piled up in the container in two seconds.

A large area can be measured from a distance without a person being inside a container, so managers can be protected from the risk of radiation exposure.

Artificial intelligence technology that identifies suspects on CCTV and even identifies people who come into contact with objects they were holding,

Even a search device that can find hidden items without having to fumble with your hands using the Terahertz wave.

Customs officials participated in the study together and developed the technology they wanted in the field to a level where they could actually put it into practice.

Based on the research and development results, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Customs Service will pursue a follow-up project worth 20 billion won for four years starting next year.
