Why don't you observe the sky tonight?
Mars will be closest to Earth today, making it the largest and brightest appearance in more than two years.
This month, we can observe not only Mars, but also other planets such as Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn at once.
Reporter Jeon Jun-hyung reports.

A reddish star shines below the left side of the white moon that brightens up the night.
Mars is the planet that has the most similar environment to Earth in the solar system.
Every two years and two months or so, Mars repeats its approach to the Earth and moves away, and tonight it comes closest to the Earth.
You can observe the largest Mars in more than two years.
Mars will shine the brightest on the 16th, more than four days later.
Mars can see the brightest image on Earth when it is on the opposite side of the sun, and the timing changes due to the crushed elliptical orbit.
[Lee Tae-hyung / Director of the Chungju Goguryo Astronomy & Science Museum: Since Mars orbits around a crushed elliptical orbit, the period and distance of its approach to the Earth are different every time, and the days when it looks the biggest and the brightest are also different]
In the night sky in January, not only Mars but also other major planets in the solar system appear all at once.
If you look at the western sky, Venus emits the brightest light, and you can also see Saturn right next to it.
If you look at the east side of the moon, Jupiter shines exceptionally brightly, and if you connect it with Sirius and draw a triangle, you can see a red-lighted Mars.
[Lee Tae-hyung / Chungju Koguryo Astronomical Science Director: Planets have very little sparkle, so you can tell them from other stars with your eyes. Mars has a red color not because of temperature, but because it has a lot of iron oxide on its surface.]
Until next month, you can see four planets floating in the night sky at the same time.
Mars will not be seen closer until 2031, after moving away from Earth.
