The government will push for large-scale research and development projects for future growth engines such as general-purpose artificial intelligence and 1,000-qubit quantum computers worth 1 trillion won this year.

It will also increase basic research support to the largest extent ever and provide economic support for scientific talent, such as the introduction of research life incentives.

Along with artificial intelligence and bio, 'quantum' is called the three major game changers.

The government has decided to draw up a five-year comprehensive plan for quantum science within the second half of this year and start large-scale research projects, including the development of a 1,000-qubit quantum computer.

It also decided to prepare a sub-law of the world's second basic AI law in the first half of the year and create a follow-up system necessary for industrial development, such as high-impact AI safety management standards.

[Koo Hyuk-chae / Planning and Coordination Director, Ministry of Science and ICT: We will continue to expand investment in AI technology to promote general-purpose AI technology development projects worth KRW 1 trillion, and to support new AI industries by creating a policy fund worth KRW 810 billion to promote private investment.]

We also take the lead in basic research and supporting excellent human resources.

The basic research will support about 2.93 trillion won this year, the largest ever.

In addition, 60 billion won worth of research life incentives will be newly established to graduate students in science and engineering who participate in government R&D projects, 800,000 won per month for master's programs and 1.1 million won for doctoral programs.

The government has decided to establish a new national special researcher system so that excellent researchers can be recruited to contributing research institutes, and to strengthen the compensation for technical fees for researchers by more than 60%.

In addition, we will establish a dedicated organization to help legal and administrative issues with global R&D cooperation and enact the Science and Technology International Cooperation Promotion Act, which includes science and technology and digital diplomatic strategies.
