Minister Park attended a plenary session of the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee today (14th) and responded to a question from Lee So-young of the Democratic Party of Korea, saying, "It is very wrong to put dangerous facilities in an emergency preparedness area near the runway."
He added that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's practical explanatory materials in the early stages of the accident were too much to follow the physical interpretation of the regulations.
He also stressed that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport should not cover up the mistakes of installing local risers based on the interpretation of the wording of domestic and foreign airport operation regulations.
Earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained in a press release on the 30th of last month, the day after the Jeju Air passenger accident, that the longitudinal safety zone at Muan Airport was 199m, exceeding the standard of at least 150m at the end of the runway, so the localizer outside the section was installed in accordance with the regulations.
Minister Park also said that dangerous facilities at seven airports nationwide were immediately corrected.
He added that he would complete improvements to navigation safety facilities at these airports within the year and consider introducing bird detection radars, runway departure prevention systems, and EMAS.
